Apple Valley officials to break ground on new state-funded park

The Victorville Daily Press reported on October 08th, 2024, that Apple Valley town officials will break ground on the state-funded Capt. Joseph McConnell Jr. USAF Park on Oct. 9 behind the Apple Valley School District Administrative Office. Named after Capt. McConnell, America’s top jet ace with 16 confirmed kills during the Korean War, the park honors his legacy and contributions.

The project is funded by an $8.4 million Proposition 68 grant awarded in 2021 as part of California’s efforts to develop and revitalize parks. While the grant covers the park’s construction, additional improvements for accessibility, such as roadway widening and ADA-compliant sidewalks, will require extra funding.

The park will include amenities such as a running track, football and baseball fields, soccer fields, inclusive playgrounds, picnic shelters, a dog park, restrooms, parking, and landscaped areas. Apple Valley will sign a 30-year lease for 10 acres of the school district’s property to build the park.
