Lenwood Project Will Encourage Development, Improve Safety

City officials say the new Lenwood project will make emergency response and industrial development easier.Lenwood Project will Encourage Development

While the ribbon was cut on the Lenwood Road Grade Separation weeks ago, it’s been taking the city some time to get it open to traffic. Even so, it’s still getting good press.

Specifically, Barstow city officials are being very vocal about all that the new project will bring to the city.  The $31 million development that widened the road and elevated it in two key places to improve traffic flow is expected to affect more than just your commute.

City officials say they think the new Lenwood bridge will encourage development because the bridge is built over the BNSF railroad tracks which will drive more people to use the 1,200-acre area nearby that has been designated for industrial use.

Furthermore, they said the Separation makes keeping the community safe an easier task for emergency responders. With the bridge open, trains passing through the area won’t cause a delay in response times. Citizens said they’ve waited as long as 15 minutes for a train to clear Lenwood Road, and in times of crisis those are minutes emergency responders simply don’t have to spare.

California Highway Patrol agrees, saying that this new overpass makes it easier for officers to exit on Lenwood Road and use the crossing to access Barstow and the surrounding area.
