World’s Eighth Largest Photovoltaic Solar Plant is Now Operational in Rosamond, CA

World’s Eighth Largest Photovoltaic Solar PlantEven in a region accustomed to celebrating new renewable energy developments, the Catalina Solar Project in Rosamond, CA is a big deal. Rosamond is part of the Antelope Valley and is north of Lancaster.

The project is the eighth-largest photovoltaic solar power plant in the world. The 900-acre Catalina solar photovoltaic power plant in the Rosamond area of Kern County is completed. The plant’s owner EDF Renewable Energy and the 143-megawatt plant have reached commercial operation in the fall of 2013.  The plant is expected to generate electricity for 35,000 homes. While California is continuing to lead the nation in renewable energy, the state’s lead can be widely attributed to Kern County. Kern County is one of the only places that has (already) exceeded California’s goal of 5,000 megawatts of renewable energy. The only industry ahead of renewable energy is oil production, with agriculture coming in third. Kern County has received $15 billion in private investment from the renewable energy industry.

The plant is located to the west and adjacent to a 1,280 acre subdivision named Tract 3261. Tract 3261 is located at Backus Road at its northern boundary, 100th Street at its eastern boundary, 110th Street West at its western boundary, and Champagne Ave. at its southern boundary. The property is level terrain that offers beautiful mountain views.
