California High-Speed Rail Takes ‘Major’ Step

Per a report by Kaitlin Lewis, Night Reporter, dated on May 24th, 2024, that The California High-Speed Rail Authority has achieved a significant milestone in its goal to create a railway connecting San Francisco to downtown Los Angeles. On Friday, the agency released the final environmental document for a 30-mile segment of the rail line between Palmdale and Burbank in Southern California. This marks the completion of the last key environmental document needed for the project, which has been over a decade in the making. The document will be presented to the Rail Authority’s Board of Directors in late June.

This high-speed rail line, part of “Phase 1” of the project, is designed to reach speeds over 200 mph, cutting travel time between San Francisco and Los Angeles to under three hours, compared to the six-hour drive. The segment between Palmdale and Burbank will allow speeds of up to 220 mph, making the 17-minute journey between Antelope Valley and San Fernando Valley more than twice as fast as driving. The environmental release includes analysis of six alternatives for this segment, and construction can begin once funding is available. The final environmental clearance for the full 494-mile Phase 1 system is expected to be completed next year for the Los Angeles to Anaheim segment.
