Barstow, BNSF Railway leaders share updates on $1.5B International Gateway project

In an October 16th, 2024, The Victorville Daily Press reported The City of Barstow and BNSF Railway hosted a community meeting to provide updates on the Barstow International Gateway (BIG) project and the city’s General Plan overhaul. The BIG project is a 4,500-acre advanced rail facility aimed at improving logistics and supply chains by transferring goods from international to domestic containers. The initiative represents a $1.5 billion investment in Barstow, expected to create over 20,000 permanent jobs and 3,000–4,000 annual construction jobs.

City officials also shared progress on Barstow’s General Plan update, launched in late 2022, which focuses on housing, public safety, transportation, recreation, and environmental preservation to guide growth over the next 20–25 years. The Gateway project is a key part of this effort, featuring cutting-edge infrastructure and informed by best practices from other facilities. Community engagement remains central, with ongoing town halls and stakeholder input shaping these initiatives.
