The time has finally come! Paul Allen’s six-engine Stratolaunch has finally been revealed! Kept under wraps for the majority of the project, this aircraft is making headlines in terms of impressive advancements.

Unlike its competitor, SpaceX, this wide-scaled project is expected to bring a rocket to high enough altitudes where the rest of the journey can be completed in an efficient manner. These capabilities can be attributed to their partnership with one of the leaders in private sector launch technology, Orbital Sciences. Paul Allen’s Stratolaunch Systems Company is expected to reduce costs associated with space launches, as it will be able to carry the launch vehicle to 30,000 feet where the rocket motors will then be ignited.

Pictures of the mammoth project have recently been released, revealing the Stratolaunch’s twin carbon fiber fuselages and the bulk of the aircraft. However, since photograph and film capabilities were limited, there are still surprises that will unfold as the project comes closer to completion. Predictions call that the massive aircraft will be ready to take its first flight in 2016, and will hopefully launch its first spacecraft by 2018.

All the magic is taking place in a custom-built 88,000 square foot wing assembly facility in Mojave, California.
