Barstow Could Get Not One, But Two Casinos In The Lenwood Area

Los Coyotes, Chemehuevi Aim For Casinos Near Lenwood In Barstow.Casinos in the Lenwood Area

Recently, there have been talks about building a casino in Barstow. The Los Coyotes Band of Cahuilla and Cupeno have brought a project before Barstow to develop land in the area for gaming.

This is made possible by the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, which dictates that tribes who are federally recognized can take land into trusts in order to use it for gaming. The Department of the Interior needs to decide that the gaming usage will be both good for the tribe and won’t negatively impact the surrounding community first, though.

Los Coyotes have been close to the approval they need for their casino, which would bring $126 million of annual revenue and 1,085 jobs to Barstow.

With the attention the Los Coyotes casino is getting, the Chemehuevi Tribe has taken notice. Their Tribal Chairman Charles Wood is now urging Barstow to build another casino under Chemehuevi leadership.

Wood claims that two casinos in the Lenwood area would bring even more business to the area and wouldn’t detract from one another. He says there’s already more than enough traffic through Barstow to support both gaming locations.

He also points out that the Chemehuevi have long ties to the area, as their sleeping circles were discovered on the 40 acres they now own in Lenwood.

Wood says there is no animosity or competition between Los Coyotes and his tribe, and says that the two casinos could actually support one another.
