Route 66-Themed Gas Station Planned for Helendale

According to the Victorville Daily Press, January 11, 2019, development of a 5,000-square-foot convenience store and gas station planned along National Trails Highway in Helendale is expected to start, according to the project’s architect. Thomas Steeno, owner of Steeno Design Studio Inc., told the Daily Press construction plans will be sent to San Bernardino County for approval. Steeno’s Hesperia-based firm has been at work on the project since 2017. He said construction could begin as early as March 2019, signaling a rare commercial addition to the local segment of the world-famous highway known colloquially as Route 66. The store will be on nearly two acres of vacant land on the southwest corner of the highway and Vista Road, according to Terri Rahhal, planning director in the county’s Land Use Services Department. The Helendale Market & Liquor Store, a barbershop and Dempsey’s Pub currently operate near the development site.
