Barstow Montara Place Shopping Center Will Break Ground Soon

Barstow’s Montara Place Shopping Center expected to break ground next week.Barstow Montara Place Shopping Center

Groundbreaking news for the Montara Place Shopping Center, literally: it’s official groundbreaking is projected to take place next Wednesday, October 21st, according to city officials.

The announcement was made in late September by Gaither Lowenstein, City of Barstow Economic Development and Planning Manager, while he spoke to the Barstow Area Chamber of Commerce Economic Development Committee. During his report, he told the committee that he expects the project will be completed by this time next year.

This is good news for the local economy, as the center is expected to add nearly 100 jobs and create commercial spaces for five additional business parcels. This, in turn, would add anywhere between 100 to 200 additional jobs.

The recent announcement is somewhat surprising as earlier this year the Super Wal-Mart, which will anchor the center, was delayed. In May, Wal-Mart’s director of communication told local press that she anticipated that the project would be completed in early 2017. It seems that timeline has moved up, though. Barstow City Manager Curt Mitchell has said that the 200,000 square-foot site plans and grading plans for the Super Wal-Mart were resubmitted on August 17th and have been approved, moving the project forward.

Ultimately, if the most recent reports on the Barstow Montara Place Shopping Center and it’s anchor, Super Wal-Mart, are accurate, this major development should get underway next week.
